August 2021 Newsletter

Holy train ride Batman! The year is half over and Dry Canyon Arts Association has made some very large strides getting our train back on the track after COVID. We have planned and executed two events with one more on the books in November. Currently we at 50 members and new memberships keep coming in. This train is really moving forward and we need to keep the momentum going.

The Summer Art at the Music Hall event was held in July. Although the day was extremely hot and really hurt our attendance we did see so many happy faces and positive feedback from our attendees during the day. Our friends at the High Desert Music Hall provided some very nice live music which really kept up morale. They were a needed tonic for the heat and much appreciated by our Artists and Customers alike.

Planning for the Fall/Winter indoor show is underway, and baring another complete shutdown due to COVID, we are on target for the best show of the year. Please keep an eye out for the announcement as we will be opening up registration for this show soon.

Due to scheduling concerns the August Membership and September Board meetings have been cancelled.

Membership Involvement—the Future of the DCAA

The Board met Thursday, August 12th and discussed the need for more membership involvement. Our organization is growing by the day and we want to continue to offer as much value for our membership as we can. This is important work for each of us and our community. We have been truly amazed by those who have stepped up to support the group but without the continued support of our membership we really can not keep up the good work.

There are several opportunities with varied levels of commitment available. We are asking our membership to please consider how they might contribute to the future success of Dry Canyon Arts Association.

Please consider the following opportunities:

Vice Chairperson

This is a voting member of the board and the time commitment is minimal. The Vice Chairperson will need to attend board meetings held once a month and participate in decision making and planning discussions for association projects. The Vice Chairperson works with the board of directors of the organization; develops and enforces policies and objectives for the organization to ensure it maintains its values and meets established goals. Additionally the Vice Chairperson would step in and lead board meetings in the absence of the Chairperson.

We Need a Vice Chairman to continue! For many months Linda Gillmore-Hill has stepped up to perform the duties of three board positions! We all owe Linda a big thanks for her outstanding efforts. However, in order for our board to continue under the State of Oregon's non-profit rules, we must maintain a full board. Recently Terri Dill-Simpson has been appointed as our new Treasurer and Linda has agreed to continue in the Chairperson position. Which still leaves us with an empty Vice Chairperson position. It is critical to the future of Dry Canyon Arts Association that we fill this position as soon as possible.

If you are interested in this position please email Linda at linda.drycanyonarts@gmail.com

Lend Me Your Walls

Are you a fan of public art? Would you like to get to know local business organization leaders and owners? The Board has approved the forming of a committee to develop and execute a program for our Artists to display their work on the walls of businesses in and around Redmond. They have named the program "Lend Me Your Walls". This group will work with the Redmond Downtown Association's Kara Roach; business and community leaders to create a network of business where our membership may have the opportunity to display their work in public spaces. We need a committee chair and 3 members to help plan and manage the program going forward.

If you would like to be involved please email Mel Archer at mela7910@gmail.com

A Space of Our Own

It has always been the goal of Dry Canyon Arts Association to find a physical space where we can host meetings; have a gallery/retail outlet and foster a community of visual and performing artists where they can gather, collaborate and support each other. To this end the board has approved the creation of a committee to explore our options and develop a plan so we can begin the process of fund raising and grant writing. This group will be meeting to explore different business models, locations and funding options. Kimberly Krueger and Bill Hunt are co-chairs in this endeavor. Bill and Kimberly bring an extensive background in Business, Real Estate and Marketing to this project, but they will need membership support. We are looking for 3–4 members to be on the committee to help with research and planning.

To kick off this venture we will be touring three of Bend's premier spaces during our September board meeting to see how other organizations, both for profit and non profit, are making this kind of business model work. So get your name in now to participate in the tour.

If you would like to be involved please email Kimberly at dcaa.marketing@gmail.com

Art Hanging System Acquisition

Recently the Friends of the Library organization have sadly decided to dissolve their non-profit organization. They reached out to us to donate a art hanging system that had been purchased for the group to use. The board voted to accept this generous donation.

New Members

Please join us in welcoming our new members this month.

PAPO at Art at the Ranch

Recently the Plein Air Painters or PAPO group participated in the "Art at the Ranch" painting competition held at Black Butte Ranch in July. PAPO member David Kinker’s painting “Peekaboo” took First Place in the People’s Choice Awards. And a special shout out to two DCAA members that took 2nd and 3rd place:

Janet Rawling’s “On the Bike Trail” 2nd Place Patricia Kirk’s “Cascade Summer” 3rd Place

Summer Art at the Music Hall

We would like to thank everyone for participating and volunteering at the Summer art sale event at the Music Hall. The weather was so hot but we all persevered.
