James Hensley

Bio:

James H. Hensley II ("Jim") is a native Oregonian, born in Eugene and a graduate from the University of Oregon with a degree in Landscape Architecture from The School of Architecture and Applied Arts. Jim spent most of his professional life in Portland, Oregon and S.W. Washington. Upon retirement in 2015, he began a second career in hand sketching trees, abandoned residences, schools, churches, barns, historic structures, and natural landscapes in the changing rural areas of Central Oregon. Jim is currently a member of Dry Canyon Arts Association of Redmond, Oregon. His work has received Second Premium at the Deschutes County Fair. His work is displayed at Smith Rock State Park, Shaniko, and the Sisters Historical Society.

Artist Statement:

Jim's subjects sketched are on site and from photos of the subject for final sketching in his studio. His work portrays the landscape created and nature in transition. His medium is pen and ink with accentuating color, highlighting the magical colors of nature at the specific time of the sketch. Jim considers himself as a "realist" pen and ink artist. He is challenged with bringing black on white beauty to an ever-changing landscape by portraying the sketch in simplicity and allowing the viewer to fill in the gaps with their imagination.
