A Journey From Detail to Freedom

October 2023 - Kelley Salber

When you step into Kelley Salber’s art studio, you find yourself caught between two worlds—the intricate details of book arts and the whimsical freedom of an art gallery, surrounded by pieces from several other artists. Kelley exemplifies the kind of forward-thinking, enthusiastic member that the Dry Canyon Art Association (DCAA) is proud to have.

Kelley’s journey into the world of art is as unique as her creations. “I took a book class from a local book artist, and she liked me!” she exclaims, recalling her introduction to the craft. For seven years, Kelley honed her skills under the tutelage of her mentor, soaking up everything she had to offer. “What a gift!” Kelley adds.

Motivated by the desire to increase awareness of art and artists in Central Oregon, Kelley joined the DCAA. She believes in the organization’s potential for growth and hopes to contribute to its success. “I am very much a people person, an encourager, and a forward thinker. I love to ideate on what is possible—not just for me but for those around me,” she shares.

Kelley specializes in book arts, employing incredible detail in every piece. She also delves into 2D mixed-media collage and watercolor, capturing the vibrant and free essence of her subjects. “I love the detail and building with book arts but also adore the freedom of watercolor,” Kelley states, encapsulating the dichotomy that defines her as an artist. Her greatest accomplishments are the commissioned pieces she has crafted. “I get to personalize the piece specifically for someone, and that delights me,” she confides.

When asked about what keeps her motivated, Kelley’s answer is simple: “I love all things book!” Her endless curiosity, coupled with the inspiration she draws from other artists, keeps her creativity flowing. “I love to see creators create,” she says, encapsulating the collaborative and supportive atmosphere she both enjoys and contributes to at the DCAA.

Kelley is particularly excited about the upcoming First Friday Art Walk and the Fall show. “It will be very fun!” she enthuses. For those aspiring to get involved with the DCAA, her advice is straightforward: “Take advantage of the programs we have in place for members and volunteer to help along the way—it takes us all to sustain who we are.”

Kelley is optimistic about the growth of the DCAA, praising its current trajectory. “The organization is growing at a great rate, and there are sustainable systems being built that will support our growth rate,” she observes. According to her, the DCAA is a pioneering organization, not only rich in experience and ideas but also committed to sustainable growth.

Looking to the future, Kelley remains resolute in her quest for artistic exploration. “Keep exploring and creating!” she proclaims, articulating her philosophy not just for herself, but as advice for any aspiring artist.

So, if you find yourself at a DCAA event, look out for Kelley Salber—a gifted artist with an infectious enthusiasm, deeply committed to both her craft and her community.
